• Biography. Richard Currier was the son of Thomas Currier and Martha Osborne of Salisbury, Wiltshire, England. According to the Parish Registry Record of St. Thomas's Church, Thomas married Martha January 14, 1610/11.

Richard was baptized March 6, 1616/7 at St. Thomas's Church, Salisbury, England and died February 1686/87 in Amesbury, MA. He is believed to be buried at "Golgotha", the town's first burying ground. Tradition says that he drowned while crossing the mill pond that was partially frozen.

He first married Ann, who died in 1675. Their children were Hannah Currier b. July 8, 1643 in Salisbury, MA. and Thomas Currier b. March 8, 1646 in Salisbury, MA. Hannah married Captain Samuel Foot and Thomas married Mary Osgood. Thomas later became known as Deacon Thomas Currier. Captain Samuel was taken by the Indians in the assault on Amesbury and killed July 7, 1690. Hannah died after August 6, 1708.

Richard married Joanna Pindor, (widow of Valentine Rowell and of William Sargent), October 26, 1646. Valentine Rowell and William Sargent are also listed on the "Golgotha" memorial as among the first twelve settlers of Amesbury, MA.

Richard was thought to be an indentured servant to Francis Dove of Salisbury, Old England according to Philip Currier in Volume I Ancestry of Philip Currier. Richard and Francis were listed on a map drawn in 1639 of the first lots in Amesbury, according to Merrill's History of Amesbury. In February 16, 1642 Richard sold to Abraham Morrill six house lots that were given to him by the town of Salisbury. In 1646 he and Thomas Macy were given the right to build a sawmill on the West side of the Powow River. Macy sold his interest to Richard in 1659. Richard operated the mill for many years. He was both a "planter" and a "millwright".

Richard Currier, John Weed, Sr., and Samuel Foot, trustees for the town of Amesbury, sold to William Osgood, Sr., in 1683/4, house and land bought of John Hoyt, Jr., for the use of ministry.

"He was one of the most prominent men of Salisbury and Amesbury" according to Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury, by David Hoyt. It was seen that Richard Currier was the first name on the list of the "Golgatha" Bowlder.
